Things to know
Ceremonies are only permitted between April - September annually due to weather limitations and for safety purposes. Ceremonies of any kind outwith these times are not permitted in any circumstances.
All Ceremonies to be held at the Castle, cliffs or surrounding land, whether legal or not MUST be booked to prevent multiple Ceremonies happening at the same time . If you do not officially book your Ceremony at the Castle, you will be turned away on the day.
Ceremonies at the Castle and cliffs are capped at 15 per year.
Wedding/Bridal Photography sessions are available on request (and in some cases are not charged for). Photography sessions permit the couple and one professional photographer only. Anything other than this will be considered a Ceremony and charged at the relevant venue hire fee.
THE CHAPEL

The Castles ancient Chapel provides a beautiful setting for Ceremonies with a central alcove making a lovely backdrop. The Chapel is walled on all sides, meaning it is slightly more sheltered from the wind.

THE SMITHY

The Castles Smithy is a popular spot for Ceremonies, with its grand door arch being an attractive position for couples to stand under whilst taking their vows. This is a smaller building, 8 people or so can be stood inside in addition to the couple, but guests can easily gather around the Smithys low walls to see and participate.

THE DRAWING ROOM

Our beautifully refurbished drawing room offers the only sheltered space at Dunnottar for ceremonies, wind and water tight, the Drawing room boasts a stunning fireplace and wooden panelled ceiling.

CEREMONY LOCATIONS AT THE CASTLE
cliffs - left side

The lefthand side cliffs offer the most unparalleled views of the Castle for Ceremonies. Nestled in the reeds, you can take your vows with an uninterrupted view of the Castle. Stairs are not required to access this location which is located perhaps 150 metres from the nearest drop-off point.

cliffs - right side

This clifftop location is accessed by taking a sweeping path and crossing a bridge over a little stream. This is the largest of the spaces at Dunnottar for Ceremonies and offers incredible views of the Castle, cliffs and ocean. Stairs are not necessary though there is a moderate incline on the path to access this location. This side of the cliffs is fenced for safety.
